Federal Aviation Administration staff in American Samoa have informed the FBI about the wilful destruction of runway lights at the airport last weekend.
The local FAA Director, Leaoina Smitty Lutu, says three flashing lights at the end of one of the runways were damaged.
The lights, which stand more than metre off the ground, were busted with a hard object.
He says the damage was discovered on Monday and thought to have occurred at the weekend.
Leaoina says since the the lights are federal property the FBI must be told.
