New Caledonia's Kanak Senate elects chief for new term

New Caledonia's Customary Senate, has elected Chief Gabriel Païta as its new head for a six-year term.

The Customary Senate was created five years ago as part of the the Nouméa accord on Kanak autonomy.

It's made up of chiefs from eight domains in New Caledonia.

On the agenda for the senate are a project to map out the traditional areas and lands, indigenous rights to nickel resources, and a possible national anthem and a flag to represent New Caledonia.
