8:25 am on 30 August 2005

The widow of Samoa's longest serving prime minister, has died in the capital, Apia.

Mrs Pitolua Alesana was 77.

Pitolua had been married to the former Samoa prime minister Tofilau Eti Alesana, who died in 1999.

Mrs Alesana is expected to be buried alongside her late husband in the village of Lalomalava in Savaii.

Funeral plans are being dictated by the availability of flights because most of her children live overseas.

Most flights into Apia are full with people attending this week's dedication of the Mormon Temple.
