PNG premier proposes Port Moresby-Fiji route as air link to Asia

Papua New Guinea's prime minister has proposed an alliance between Air Niugini and Fiji's Air Pacific to fly passengers travelling between South East Asia and Fiji to travel through Port Moresby.

Sir Michael Somare has made the proposal during his current official visit to Fiji.

He says this will see all passengers travelling to and from South East Asia bypass their current travel through Australia, which has introduced stringent security checks.

Sir Michel has already floated the idea with Fiji officials and hopes the two airlines will progress it further.

Several months ago a security check on Sir Michael at Brisbane Airport led to a major diplomatic row between the two countries.
