A controversial bill which proposes to keep corrupt leaders in office when they are found guilty of misconduct is ready for tabling in the Papua New Guinea parliament next month.
The National newspaper reports this is despite outcry and overwhelming opposition to the proposed law by the public, corruption watchdogs and various interest groups.
The bill to amend the Organic Law, being proposed by MP Kappa Yarka, has been approved by the Speaker, Jeffery Nape, and gazetted.
It is ready for tabling in the October sitting of Parliament.
The bill was gazetted on August the 2nd and was hurried through despite not fulfilling the required one-month grace period after its publication.
The Chief Ombudsman, Ila Geno, has described the proposal as a move to institutionalise corruption.
