Special audit of Fiji opposition leader's office

9:14 am on 16 September 2005

Fiji's auditor general is to carry out an urgent special audit of the parliamentary office of the opposition leader, Mahendra Chaudhry.

Fiji TV quotes the auditor general, Eroni Vatuleka, as saying his office has received a written complaint which warrants an audit.

It will be the second such audit of Mr Chaudhry's office in the parliamentary complex, the first being in 2003.

Mr Vatuleka would not say who made the complaint or what was its nature.

But Fiji TV says it understands the audit will focus on the alleged abuse of parliamentary allowances and travel claims.

The general secretary of the National Federation Party, Pramod Rae, says for the auditor general to carry out such an audit the matter must be serious and its outcome should be made public quickly. END
