Fiji's military has warned that the country has penetrable borders and its many uninhabited islands and inland areas could be used as dropping off points and even training areas for terrorists.
The military spokesman, Lt Col Orisi Rabukawaqa, has told the Sunday Times there is even a possibility that there could be home-grown terrorists who may be used either within the country or other global hot spots.
Lt Col Rabukawaqa says those who promote the ideology of ethno-nationalism could also threaten stability within the country to discredit the credibility of law enforcement agencies.
He says terrorists thrive in countries where the government is weak and law enforcement agencies are non-existent or ineffective.
The military's concern comes just as a source from the Transnational Crime Unit has revealed that there were reports of operatives linked to Al Qaeda travelling to the South Pacific earlier this year.
The source is quoted as saying that where there are American, British and Australian people and property, there is risk.
The source says terrorists don't discriminate when it comes to blowing up places, as long as they can inflict as much damage or death as possible.
