American Samoa council strips woman of chiefly status

10:14 am on 22 September 2005

American Samoa's Village Council of Pago Pago has voted unanimously to remove the high chiefly status of a female matai.

This means Fetaiaiga Kava has lost her chiefly title, Fanene.

She decided to take court action against Paramount Chief Mauga Tasi Asuega because he sacked her from being the county chief of Mauputasi.

The village council said court action was an affront to the high esteem of the district, and an embarrasment.

But Kava disputes this, saying she wasn't told of the council's latest decision, and no member of the council has any authority to remove her.

She says she's resolved to stand up for what's right and won't be intimidated.
