Two mental health experts interview Nauru detainees

12:40 pm on 22 September 2005

Two mental health experts have arrived in Nauru to assess the state of the 27 asylum seekers being held there as part of Australia's Pacific solution.

The national editor for the Age Newspaper in Australia, Michael Gordon says a 20 year old Iraqi man is under constant watch after serious acts of self- harm.

Mr Gordon says mental health experts Paris Aristotle and Dr Ida Kaplan will interview the asylum seekers today.

He says the detainees, who have been on the island for almost four years, have reached a desperate state and the majority are suffering from depression.

"When I was there most of the people I spoke to said they couldn't sleep, they were relying on tablets, some were saying they were taking three tablets a day and basically just surviving on medication."
