Japan says Fiji may have breached agreement over Lami jetty

3:20 pm on 23 September 2005

A Japanese diplomat in Fiji says the government in Suva should return the millions of dollars to Japan if a project to upgrade the jetty in Lami is cancelled.

The First Secretary of the Japanes embassy, Hirotsugu Ikeda, made the comment to the Fiji Times amid a row in Fiji over the project's cancellation.

The Japanes embassy says it has not been notified officially that the project is off.

But Mr Ikeda says the money would have to be returned to the Japanese government because that was part of the agreement signed by Japan and Fiji.
