Tongan parliament to resume sitting after repeated adjournments

10:16 am on 26 September 2005

The Speaker of the Tongan parliament, the Honourable Veikune, has called for the assembly to convene today after nearly five weeks of adjournment.

The House was first adjourned for more than two weeks during the recent public servants' strike, then it reconvened on September 13th for a day before was adjourned again until last Monday.

But the speaker then adjourned the house until today.

According to the website Matangi Tonga, the Honourable Veikune said this would give members ample time to study bills, motions and annual reports.

The house is yet to debate the push for democratic reform expressed during a recent mass rally.
