New Caledonian nickel company opens coordination centre

The Goro Nickel enterprise in New Caledonia has opened a coordination centre in Noumea as work gets underway on the region's biggest project.

The centre is to coordinate the employment and training service as well as the construction company for the multi-billion dollar enterprise in the south of the main island.

The Noumea centre will get information from the branches in Mont Dore and Yate which is near the site of the planned nickel processing plant.

A company statement says all companies, be they local or foreign, are obliged to first see if there is a New Caledonian qualified for a job before seeking staff elsewhere.

This comes amid union concerns over the planned arrival of thousands of skilled workers from the Philippines.
