Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, says the government will not support efforts by MPs to avoid being dismissed for misconduct in office.

Sir Michael Somare indicated that he did not support enacting legislations to protect leaders who committed serious crimes.

The bill, sponsored by MP Kappa Yarka, would amend the power of the country's Leadership Tribunal to dismiss MPs who breach the mandatory leadership code for politicians and bureaucrats.

The bill has drawn intense criticims from other MPs, public watchdog groups, non-government organisations and the local media.

The National reports the bill is due to go before Parliament next month.
