Cooks audits criticised by both sides in parliament

Members from both sides of Parliament in the Cook Islands have attacked the country's Audit Office for unfair reports.

The recently dismissed justice minister, Tupou Faireka, said one should be careful the audit office does not become the judge as well as the investigator.

The new finance minister Dr Terepai Maoate told parliament it was time to look at amending the audit office act and give people the chance to defend themselves.

He said audit tables reports in parliament whether or not the person involved replies to criticisms.

Members of parliament also attacked the media.

Aitutaki MP Teina Bishop said audit reports had been hijacked and put on public display.

Criticism of audit and the media came as Health minister, Peri Vaevae Pare, resigned from his portfolio to allow a police investigation to take place into his handling of the ministry.
