Fiji military to take court action to retain budget control

4:23 pm on 12 October 2005

Fiji's military says court action is the only way to retain control over its budget.

Recent amendments to the Financial Management Act has now placed the budgets of the police and military under the control of the Home Affairs Ministry.

Military spokesperson, Captain Neumi Leweni, says the ministry's move impinges on the constitutional independence of the military and the police.

He says the military wants to go ahead with a judicial review through the High Court.

"Yes I think that's the only best option. Now that they've put it into effect, there's no other way that they'd like to change the situation so its only best its resolved in court."
