A Fiji man has been jailed for four years for assaulting the Australian High Commissioner in Suva.

Panapasa Sulua, who's 20 years old and from a squatter settlement, attacked High Commissioner Jennifer Rawson whilst she was jogging near her residence in January.

The website Fijilive reports that the High Court heard Sulua had been drinking kava and had smoked marijuana before attacking Ms Rawson and stealing her Walkman.

Ms Rawson suffered severe facial injuries in the attack and she was flown to Australia for treatment before resuming her duties.

Sulua's lawyer, the Australian, John Cameron asked that his client didn't receive the maximum 10-year sentence, after he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob.

Sulua reportedly wrote a letter of apology to Ms Rawson.

He's been in prison awaiting sentence since he was arrested in January.
