Australian politician calls for closure of Port Hedland centre as Nauru camp remains open

A politician in Australia says the federal government can close its detention centre in Western Australia now that it has decided to maintain the nearly empty offshore facility on Nauru.

Last week, Australia announced that it was to accept all but two of the failed asylum seekers being held in Nauru for further processing on the mainland.

A backbencher in Western Australia has told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that as a result of this the Port Hedland detention centre should be shut.

Tom Stephens says the facility is empty and an eyesore.
