PNG leadership 'has to start listening on Papua issue'

8:24 am on 22 October 2005

The Melanesia Solidarity Network says Papua New Guinea's leaders have got to start listening to the people on the issue of neighbouring Papua.

John Kawowo of Melanesian Solidarity says they asked the PNG Government when it assumed the chair at the recent Melanesian Spearhead Group meeting and at next week's Forum summit to put Papua on the agenda.

But the PNG Government has been unswerving in its view that Papua is a domestic isue for Indonesia.

John Kawowo says 95 per cent of Papua New Guineans support the push for self determination in Papua and this point will be made in a petition to be presented to Sir Michael Somare next week during the Forum meeting.

"The people of Papua New Guinea are supporting their concern and they're raising the issue of West Papua and the government of Papua New Guinea has to listen to the people of Papua New Guinea. If they represent the people of Papua New Guinea's view, then they have to listen to what the people of Papua New Guinea are saying."
