HIV/Aids bigger problem in Papua province than in PNG - claim

The Indonesian Human Rights Committee says the problem of HIV/Aids is greater in Papua than in neighbouring PNG where the infection rates are said to be at epidemic levels.

The Committee says comparing the prevalence rates of people living with AIDS the figures for West Papua are at least one and half times greater than in PNG.

It says HIV/AIDS is a ticking time-bomb in Papua which has recently been determined to have the highest HIV/AIDs incidence in Indonesia.

The Committee says it's therefore unfortunate the Pan Pacific AIDS Conference being held this week in Auckland will have no representation from any of the organisations in Papua who are working on the urgent issue.

Papua will however be represented by Adolfina Zongonnau a Papuan human rights activist currently based in Vanuatu.

The Committee says the HIV/AIDS problem is made worse by poor health monitoring and the presence of illegal brothels established by the Indonesian military.

It says it is vital the family of the Pacific does not overlook Papua.
