FBI reported to be probing possible inter-Samoa human trafficking

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation is reported to be investigating a possible human trafficking scheme between Samoa and American Samoa.

Some of the FBI agents who arrived in American Samoa last week have travelled to Apia over the weekend and are reported to be conducting interviews with past recruits of the scheme.

Young women from rural villages in Samoa were said to have been brought into American Samoa in 2003, on 30-day permits.

A court has heard that migrants worked as waitresses but were threatened with being beaten if they didn't provide sexual favours to customers who asked for them.
