Fiji church seen as main source of anti-gay rhetoric

An HIV/AIDS conference has been told that the abuse and discrimination homosexuals suffer in Fiji is reaching horrifying proportions.

A member of the Fiji's sexual minority community, Carlos Perera, told the regional conference in Auckland that they have identified the Methodist Church of Fiji as the main source of anti-homosexual rhetoric.

Mr Perera says for example in 2003, the Methodist Church issued a statement that all homosexuals should be stoned to death.

"Again in 2005, he says, after two men were jailed for engaging in homosexual acts, the church issued another statement that all homosexuals should be put to death and be destroyed."
