UN Secretary-General: Pacific has opportunity for peaceful century

2:33 pm on 28 October 2005

The United Nations secretary-general, Kofi Annan, says the world body and Pacific regional organisations have the opportunity to make the 21st century a peaceful and prosperous one in the region.

In a message to the Pacific Islands Forum leaders, Mr Annan says the UN and Pacific organisations should exploit their comparative strengths in conflict prevention and peace-building.

Mr Annan says the close interaction between the United Nations and the Forum observers during the elections in Bougainville, shows that co-operation between the UN and regional bodies is growing stronger and deeper.

Mr Annan says the international organisations should reinforce a collective approach to security.
