Fiji businesses urged to buy fuel from PNG

11:11 am on 1 November 2005

The Fiji Chamber of Commerce and Industry says Fiji should buy fuel from Papua New Guinea as one way of containing costs.

The Fiji Times reports that the suggestion has come as fuel prices skyrocket and the price of cooking gas goes up by 10 per cent from today.

The Chamber president, Taito Waradi, says Fiji is a member of the Melanesian Spearhead Group and PNG has the oil supplies and a refinery to cater for Fiji's needs.

He says Fiji should stop buying fuel from Singapore and Australia.

Mr Waradi says the fuel price rises will have an effect on retail consumer prices and the government must come up with a policy decision.
