Tonga NZ community leader claims much misinformation about political situation in Tonga

The head of the Tongan Advisory Council in New Zealand, Melino Maka, says there's a lot of misinformation about the political situation in Tonga.

Mr Maka was one of six speakers at a seminar on democracy and change in Tonga this week.

Most of the speakers suggested that a fully democratic system might not be suited to the Kingdom.

Mr Maka says most of the Tongan community in New Zealand is not advocating drastic change but a minority seem to be speaking the loudest.

"There is some sectors of the community who call for change. There's a lot of people, those calls came about as people not understanding the whole process of things happening in Tonga. Purely because of frustration, they felt that their views are not heard at the top so having a forum like this is allowing us to exchange views of how we can inform our community."
