People smuggling arrests at Fiji's Nadi airport

Authorities in Fiji have arrested four people in connection with a people smuggling racket through Nadi International Airport.

Police say a foreigner and an airport employee were believed to be involved in a conspiracy to bribe immigration and customs officials in an attempt to smuggle two Asians onto a flight from Nadi to Canada.

They say this may be connected to other illegal people smuggling activities not only in Fiji but in South East Asia as well.

The arrests took place after a tip-off to the Transnational Crime Unit.

The penalty in Fiji for people smuggling is 20 years in prison or a 450-thousand US dollar fine or a combination of both.
