Regional counter-terrorism exercise under way in Fiji

4:22 pm on 8 November 2005

Forum Island countries are being tested on their ability to respond to a terrorist threat at a two day exercise currently under way in Fiji.

Representatives from 16 member countries, as well as French Polynesia and New Caledonia, and regional law enforcement organisations, are attending the theoretical exercise in Suva.

It's the first time the region's ability to plan for, and respond to a hypothetical terrorist incident, is being assessed.

The executive director of the secretariat of the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police, Superintendent Cam Ronald, says those attending "Exercise Ready Pasifika" will test how well their security systems work internally and regionally.

"People will be asked to consider what is the best way to spread an alert from country to country, what is the best way to get information. And, it may be either through police or customs, or immigration, or perhaps through the foreign affairs officials. It's expected this may well lead to an exercise where staff are deployed, where it actually tests police and officials on the ground, in various countries."
