French Polynesian hospital strike averted

12:39 pm on 9 November 2005

The French Polynesian government has averted a strike by hospital workers.

Less than 24 hours after their union issued a strike notice, the two sides have reached a deal.

The news agency Tahitipresse says the relevant minister, Pierre Frebault, signed an accord, details of which are not mentioned.

Last week, dozens of workers marched to the presidential palace to press their demand for better conditions but they were told that savings needed to be made.

After the impasse, the union decided yesterday to launch an indefinite strike which Mr Frebault has now averted.
