Social workers in French Polynesia set to strike

11:07 am on 14 November 2005

Social workers in French Polynesia are set to go on strike tomorrow night after talks for better staffing failed.

The workers, who belong to the A Tia I Mua union, say they will walk off their jobs after the minister for solidarity, Patricia Jennings, refused to agree to the hiring of an extra 51 staff.

A union representative has told the Tahitipresse news agency that more is needed than the minister's consent for the changes that they seek to improve the service.

The strike notice comes less than a week after a threatened strike by hospital staff was averted.
