Sacked Vanuatu finance minister takes party to opposition

6:19 pm on 14 November 2005

Vanuatu's outgoing finance minister says he believes his decision not to sign a second Memorandum of Agreement after the Port Vila municipal election is behind his sacking.

Moana Carcasses will be replaced by the Lands Minister Willie Jimmy, in one of two changes the Prime Minister Ham Lini has made to cabinet in the weekend.

The Green Confederation leader, who handed over the portfolio to his successor this morning, says he has been given no reason for his sacking and was not informed personally by Mr Lini.

However, Mr Carcasses says he appears to be paying the price for his party's refusal to renege on a contract and sign a second MOA on the newly elected Port Vila council.

"I already signed one already. Vanuatu's problem is that you can sign one or two or three, there's no problem with the alternative. I'm not like this. If I sign a document, it's binding, that's it. That's the main reason why I think I lost my seat."

Moana Carcasses says the Greens now take nine MPs into opposition, leaving the coalition government with 34 of the 52 seats in parliament.
