US Secretary of State to report to House of Representatives on conditions in Indonesia's Papua

8:21 pm on 17 November 2005

Legislation now being considered by the United States Government calls for the Secretary of State to investigate the plight of the people in Indonesia's Papua province.

Condelezza Rice is to report within 90 days to the House of Representatives International Relations Committee as it finalises an appropriations bill considering among other issues, US military assistance for Indonesia.

One of the architects of the legislation, the American Samoa Congressman, Falemaveaga Eni Hunkin, says the Secretary of State will investigate just what the Indonesia military is up to in Papua.

"The report also provides a report from the Secretary of State on the current humanitarian and human rights conditions in West Papua including access for international and domestic humanitarian groups and even the media."
