Alleged illegal fishing in eastern Solomons

5:24 pm on 18 November 2005

Reports from Solomon Islands say there has been illegal fishing in the country's east.

Chiefs from Utupua and Vanikoro have complained about alleged poaching in the 12 mile provincial zone.

A correspondent says the chiefs want the national government to investigate the origin of the unidentified vessel.

A spokesman for the chiefs says foreign fishing vessels have to pay a mandatory fee if they wants to fish in the traditional zone close to the islands and obtain a licence.

Provincial fishing authorities in Temotu say there are no licences holders registered in the area.
