Fiji gold mining company, Emperor, says it is proud of its safety record despite a worker being killed in the mine last Friday.

Emperor's general manager, Sean O'Connor, says the company is sorry about the accident, saying it lost an valuable colleague.

The Fiji Trades Union Congress president and Labour MP, Daniel Urai, has called on the government to include miners in the occupational health and safety law.

Mr O'Connor says last Friday's incident was an unfortunate accident.

"We have actually got a very good safety record and it is comparable with the safety statistics being achieved by mines in Australia and South Africa; and we are very proud of our record."

Mr O'Connor says the company is currently reviewing its safety standards and will introduce new ones if necessary.
