Cooks police enforce liquor ban

8:23 am on 22 November 2005

Police and licensing authorities in the Cook Islands are cracking down on the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

The Cook Islands News reports police patrols visited a number of restaurants yesterday, to remind them they can't sell alcohol even with meals before 6pm.

The newspaper reports it's a legal provision in liquor licences for restaurants not attached to hotels with accommodation, and it appears to have been ignored and not enforced for many years.

The manager of the Sails Restaurant, Tim Tierney, says he intends to call a meeting of the Rarotonga Restaurant Association to see if a change in the law can be promoted.
