Tons of mail for Marshall Islands delayed for nearly five months

10:28 am on 22 November 2005

More than 25 tons of US mail destined for the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia has been stuck with the PM&O shipping line since July.

The balance of the mail is to be shipped to Majuro on the next Matson barge, which is scheduled to arrive on the December 14th, nearly five months after schedule.

It has been standard practice for the US postal service to ship mail for the Marshall Islands and Micronesia on PM&O from its facility in Oakland, California.

PM&O's ships have been embroiled in a series of legal disputes with ports in Hawaii and in Honolulu since the early summer.

The US postal service in Honolulu has apologized to its customers for the inconveniences caused by the

mail delay and it's pledged to do everything in its power to ensure that the situation doesn't recur.
