Appeal to Fiji MPs to put parliament ahead of party

8:25 am on 26 November 2005

A veteran Fiji Labour Party MP has appealed to all parliamentarians to put parliament ahead of party politics.

Radio Fiji reports that the appeal has come from Krishna Datt who is retiring from politics at the end of this term of the current House of Representatives.

Mr Datt said both sides of the house have a role to play in strengthening the institution of parliament.

He said if parliament is threatened by party directives, they should defend parliament.

Mr Datt said if the institution of parliament isn't there, parties won't be there, MPs won't be there and the democratic system won't be there.
