Fiji-Tonga reef spat resurfaces at summit

9:17 am on 29 November 2005

Fiji's territorial dispute with Tonga over the ownership of Minerva Reef has featured at the Commonwealth Summit in Malta.

Radio Legend reports that Fiji's minister for foreign affairs and external trade, Kaliopate Tavola, has told the summit that the dispute over Minerva Reef has escalated.

He says Fiji's map shows Minerva as part of its territory while the Tongan map includes Minerva as part of the kingdom's territory.

Mr Tavola says the Fiji government has allocated US$300,000 to carry out a baseline survey to establish benchmark co-ordinates to settle the dispute.

The survey will be carried out next year.
