Thousands march in Papeete as French Polynesia strike starts

11:59 am on 1 December 2005

Thousands of people have marched through the French Polynesian territorial capital, Papeete, on the first morning of an indefinite general strike.

The news agency Tahitipresse reports officials as saying 3,000 people walked from the Willy Bambridge stadium to the territorial assembly.

Organisers say 4,500 people took part in the demonstration.

The marchers reportedly wanted to stage a sit-in at parliament and be received by politicians.

The union which represents 80 per cent of French Polynesian workers says the marchers included many civil servants, customs officers, teachers and workers at the local branch of the state broadcaster.
