Solomon Islands Treasurer slams budget backbiting

9:16 am on 6 December 2005

The Solomon Islands Treasurer Peter Boyers has slammed critics of his 2006 Budget.

Mr Boyers told parliament that suggestions the government should borrow overseas would mire the country in debt, and feed corruption.

The treasurer said past budgets had led to a collapse of public services.

He said debts now cost around one fifth of the budget, which amounted to a lot of schools, nurses, clinics and roads.

The government was dealing with debts created by past governments, he said, because they never intended to repay them.

Mr Boyers said each year past governments had overspent and created more debt, then people turned it around and blamed it on donors and advisers.
