American Samoa opts for flat fee for child hospital care

7:35 pm on 7 December 2005

American Samoa's Hospital Authority Board has approved an all inclusive hospital fee for children under 18 of 20 US dollars.

The board's chairman, Charles Warren, says it voted unanimously to approve the fee and the hospital management is now working out procedures for implementing it.

This comes as there was concern that parents would no longer take their children to the hospital because of the costs as all aspects of treatment were itemised and charged separately.

The Chief Financial Officer of the LBJ David Deprin expects that the procedures for the flat child fee will be worked out by the start of next week and the hospital should be ready to implement it immediately after that.
