The US Marine Corps has stepped up its recruiting efforts in American Samoa offering high school students another choice in military careers.

Staff Sergeant Jason Arellano says the Marine Corps will establish a permanent recruiter in American Samoa in January.

He says the historical ties between American Samoa and the Marines make the territory an ideal place to recruit.

"We want to get that tradition started again. You know the community is asking us, 'When are you guys going to open an office? Why aren't you guys here?' Well we're here, we're going to be here in January and the marines have landed and the situation will be well at hand."
