Young women in American Samoa unable to afford new hospital fees - survey

2:46 pm on 9 December 2005

292 women or 97 per cent of those surveyed by the Young Women's Christian Association of American Samoa say they cannot afford the new fee increases implemented by the LBJ Tropical Medical Centre.

A total of 300 women were surveyed two weeks ago and more than half of them are recommending that the leaders of the government do something to remove the new fees and bring the hospital fees back to their previous level.

The survey was carried out by the YWCA after it received what it called horror stories from women who were unable to pay the new fees.

Members of the group are scheduled to announce the results of their survey when they testify in the Senate-sponsored public hearing about the LBJ fees.
