New domestic carrier to launch Tonga flights

4:41 pm on 9 December 2005

The new domestic carrier, Airlines Tonga, is to start services on Monday December the 19th after being awarded the tender to operate in the kingdom this week.

The government asked for tenders because the existing carrier Peau Vava'u was not reaching the outer Niua islands.

The local travel company Teta Tours has joined forces with Air Fiji to create the new airline.

Airlines Tonga's chairman and chief executive of Air Fiji, Sialeni Vuetaki, says the company was successful in its bid because it will be able to provide reliable services to all the islands in the kingdom.

"Together with that, the speed at which we can commence our service and the third factor I believe which they took into consideration was the backing by the two major shareholders and that is Air Fiji, with our aircraft and our financial position and our experience in providing service, a domestic service in Fiji, together with Teta Tours, a well-known Tongan company in Tonga."
