French Polynesia is likely to get approved destination status from China next year.
The announcement was made as French Polynesia's President, Oscar Temaru, met a high-level Chinese officials in Tahiti to talk business, trade and tourism.
These include the Paris-based Chinese ambassador Jinjun Zhao, who arrived in Pape'ete on Friday.
China has granted such status to several Pacific countries, including the Cook Islands and New Zealand.
