Samoa's Government puts clamps on ex-public doctors engaging in private practice

Samoa's Ministry of Health says free clinics for the public offered by the Samoa Medical Association are illegal.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Health Ministry Palantina Toelupe says the Medical Council has to approve doctors before they can engage in private practice.

Only three former government doctors who recently resigned have a license to practice privately.

Last week some of the doctors were stopped from holding free clinics in Savaii.

The Samoa Observer reports Ms Palantina did not say why the Savaii clinic was not allowed.

Ms Palantina also said that it is illegal for five former house surgeons to serve their registration period of up to 2 years with the MedCen private hospital.
