The Governor of Madang province in Papua New Guinea, James Yali, has been remanded in custody awaiting sentence after being found guilty of rape.

Justice David Cannings at the National Court sitting in Madang found Yali guilty of raping a young woman at the governor's office on the night of October the 13th last year.

The Post Courier newspaper reports Yali was taken away to Beon prison until sentencing on the 17th of January.

Yali faces between 15 and 25 years in jail and he's set to lose the governorship and his seat in the national parliament for the Saidor Open constituency.
