American Samoan Congressman calls for senate support on extending tax credits

11:21 am on 19 December 2005

Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin is calling on members of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee to support a bill which extends federal tax credits for American Samoa.

The extensions are included in the Tax Reconciliation Act of 2005 however the House and Senate have different versions of the bill.

The Senate version does not include the tax credits extension that the two canneries in American Samoa say offer them a competitive edge.

The tax rebate expires December 31.

The House and Senate are expected to conference next week and try to reach a compromise over their differing bills.

Faleomavaega says if the House and Senate agree, then the tax credits extended to the canneries will become retroactive.
