Former PNG PM suffers stroke in understaffed hospital

8:42 am on 31 December 2005

The former Papua New Guinea prime minister Sir Bill Skate suffered a stroke yesterday in hospital in Port Moresby.

Plans to send Sir Bill to Australia for further medical treatment yesterday were postponed.

Port Moresby General Hospital is understaffed owing to an ongoing strike by most of its nurses, who're campaigning for better wages and working conditions.
