Solomons union says government ignoring payrise request

12:41 pm on 6 January 2006

The Solomon Islands Public Employees Union says the public service is seemingly ignoring a request for a five per cent wage increase.

The union's general secretary, Paul Belande, has told Solomons radio that it's been nearly a month since the letter was delivered to the Public Service Department, with no response yet.

He says if the government rejects the increase, it must convince the union why it can't pay.

Mr Belande says if it agrees, it should confirm the method of payment and the negotiations period.

The union wants a five percent wage increase for its members because certain government departments have recently had salaries re-evaluated but not others.
