Court threat hangs over striking PNG nurses who defied order

The director of medical services at the Port Moresby General Hospital in Papua New Guinea, Dr Simon Mete, is reported as saying that nurses who defied a national court order to return to work will be dealt with, for contempt of court.

The Pacnews news agency report confirms that less than 100 nurses are involved.

The court order was obtained by the Health Department and the Attorney General last week, prompting most nurses to return to work after a strike over demands for higher pay.

The national police commissioner Sam Inguba had issued a warning that those who defied the order could face arrest.
