There are reports in Papua New Guinea that an unidentified body found in a dug out canoe floating along the Sepik River, may be that of a New Zealander.

The body of the middle aged man was found on the river by villagers in November and was later buried.

Villagers told police that while there was no identification, they believed it was a New Zealander because of the tatoos on the body.

Police have visited the area but have yet to remove the body from the burial site.

New Zealand's High Commission in Papua New Guinea says there have been no reports of missing New Zealanders in the country and it has yet to be contacted about the case by PNG authorities.
